The Scottish Association of Writers

Writers Clubs ('Groups', 'Circles', 'Workshops') throughout Scotland are members. All who are interested in creative writing band together in a group are welcome as members of the association - the 'SAW'.  Currently the Secretary of the association is: Marc R. Sherland

Every year, usually the last week-end in March, the SAW hosts a weekend school for members. In the past they have been held at Peebles Hydro, Crieff Hydro, the Angus Hotel, Blairgowrie, and recently The Erskine Bridge Hotel, Clydeside.

Well known authors (novelists, dramatists, poets, writers for children etc) and journalists attend each year as speakers and adjudicators of the various competitions.  There are 12 categories of competition:  Three for novels, including the prestigious 'Constable' Trophy, General short story, Woman's short story, General article, Humorous article, Poetry, Childrens' story, Drama, and so on.

The Weekend School is open only to members of the Scottish Association of Writers

Writers' Forum

Worldwide Writers provide a window on the web for their excellent short story magazine 'Writers Forum'. Their website has a very good links page, providing information on courses, competitions, publishers & agents, as well as other resources.  Well worth a visit.

Scottish Book Trust

The Scottish Book Trust is an independent educational charity which exists to promote literature in all its forms as central to the cultural life of Scotland. The Trust operates the 'Writers in Scotland Scheme' (amongst other things) and the site contains a searchable database of writers in Scotland who are part of the scheme. So if you're looking for a writer in a particular genre for an event - get in touch.

The National Association of Writers' Groups

The NAWG is an association for both writers groups and individuals, with two-tiers of membership. Group membership (for clubs/circles) is £25.00, whilst Associate membership (for individuals) is £10.00 per year. To find out what the NAWG has to offer, and to obtain an application form, contact:

Fish Publishing

Fish Publishing runs the Fish Short Story Prize, one of the largest international short story competitions.  They also run poetry, crime, and historical fiction competitions and provide a full editorial consultancy service designed to provide writers with one to one, on-going, constructive feedback on their work, whether it is a complete novel or just the beginnings.

Arts Council funded YouWriteOn.com is a free site which is funded by the UK Arts Council to assist new fiction writers. YouWriteOn.com's premise is simple: members review and rate fellow writers opening chapters or short stories, and their stories receive a review back in turn to help writers develop their stories. Each month the five highest rated stories receive a free professional critique from one of our literary professionals.
